Ali Suavi (ʿAlī Suʿāvī, 1255-95/1838-78) was an Ottoman journalist and political activist who was born in Cerrahpaşa, Istanbul. His father, Hüseyin Ağa (Ḥüseyin Agha), was a paper burnisher (mühreci) . Suavi recounted in his memoirs (published in the journal Ulum (ʿUlūm ) in 1870) that he graduated from Davud Paşa Rüştiye (Dāvūd Paşa Rüşdiyye) and worked as a clerk for about three years in the Dersaadet Yoklama Kalemi (Dersaʿādet Yoqlama Qalemi) in Bab-ı Seraskeri (Bāb-ı Serʿaskerī, Istanbul Office of the Military Inspectorate).
