Adapazarı is a city in northwestern Anatolia (in the Marmara region of present-day Turkey), in the fertile Akova plain, on the lower course of the Sakarya River (ancient Sangarius). Originally it lay between two branches of the Sakarya, and the city's name derives from its initial location, as well as its historical function as a regional commercial centre ( ada , "island," pazar , "marketplace").
