Adabiyah School , founded in 1909, was a private, Islam-based, "secular" elementary school in Padang, West Sumatra, the first "modernist" Islamic school in Indonesia. The idea of establishing an Islam-based modern school was first entertained by Haji (later Dr.) Abdullah Ahmad (1878-1933), the emerging leader of the Kaum Muda, the religious reform movement in Minangkabau (West Sumatra).
