Aḥmad Zakī Abū Shādī (1892-1955) was a poet, nationalist, translator of Shakespeare, editor of a literary monthly, active intellectual who promoted new literary trends and supported young writers, bacteriology professor at Alexandria University, and beekeeper. But he made his most lasting contribution as an important and highly inspirational Egyptian poet who succeeded in bringing the Arabic Romantic movement to its acme and formed one of the first pan-Arab literary schools, "Apollo."
