The Abkhaz (Abkhāz) are inhabitants of the eastern Black Sea coast, in the Caucasus region. This ethnonym comes from Greek (άβασγοί) through Georgian (აფხაზები); the autonym is "Apswa." Using primarily linguistic data, the origins of Abkhazians can be traced back to the Abeshla tribe of ancient Anatolia, first mentioned in Assyrian inscriptions of the twelfth century B.C.E. Greek sources of the fifth to first centuries B.C.E. mention the Heniochi as inhabiting the part of Colchis that is present-day Abkhazia. In the first century B.C.
