Drug trafficking threatens the stability of nations across the globe. From the Middle East to the Western Hemisphere, many organizations are capitalizing on the lucrative business of drug trafficking. Due to the large quantities of money generated, any organization not concerned with conducting themselves in a lawful manner is interested in the ability to obtain vast amounts of wealth through illicit trafficking of drugs. As shipping has evolved to be faster and easier, so did the ability of groups to transport drugs over larger areas. This allowed larger quantities of drugs to be moved over larger distances, with the United States being one of the major marketplaces of interest. With this increased interest of illegal drug trafficking into the United States came interest from previously unsuspected perpetrators. Recently, fourth wave terror groups have gained an increased interest in the illegal drug industry, simply due to the amount of wealth that can easily generated by the drug trade. Despite the prohibitions of drugs and intoxicants by Islamic teaching, this does not stop many terror groups from capitalizing on the available resources associated with the drug industry. It is known that drug cartels and terror groups have associated with one another in the past, posing a direct threat to the United States; this project examines the questions, "What can be expected to occur in the future between drug cartels and terrorists based on past and present events, and what are the risks to the U.S. and implications for strategic security based on the ongoing and possible future collaboration between drug cartels and terrorists?"
