Musa paradisiaca (Plantain) is widely consumed in sub-Sahara Africa and prepared as different delicacies. However, its peels are known to constitute a menace to the society hence adding to the prevailing problem of environmental pollution, particularly in places where ruminants (sheep and goat) are not allowed to roam. Current study investigated the cardioprotective effects of aqueous extract of riped Musa paradisiaca peel in isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction Wistar rats. A total of 64 Wistar rats were randomly assigned into eight groups of eight rats each and treated as follows: Group 1 served as control administered distilled water, Group 2 served as myocardial infarction model administered isoproterenol (ISO) on days 15th and 16th, Groups 3, 4 and 5 were orally pre-treated with Musa paradisiaca peels extract (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight, respectively) from 1st to 14th and then induced with myocardial infarction by the administration of ISO (85 mg/kg subcutaneously twice at an interval of 24 hours) on days 15th and 16th; Groups 6 and 7 served as treatment groups that were induced with myocardial infarction by subcutaneous administration of ISO on 1st and 2nd days followed by oral treatment with Musa paradisiaca peels extract (100 and 400 mg/kg body weight, respectively) from 3rd to 16th day and Group 8 served as positive control pre-treated with aspirin at 30 mg/kg from 1st to 14th and then induced with myocardial infarction by subcutaneous administration of ISO on days 15th and 16th. In model group (group 2), Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) study revealed increase level of serum myocardial tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), cardiac troponil-I (C Tn-1) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) in the myocardial infarcted rats. There was also evidence of reduction in serum antioxidant (catalase and superoxide dismutase) and Na/K-ATPase level; electrocardiogram revealed aterioventricular block and histopathology of heart revealed marked necrosis and inflammation. Pre-treatment with Musa paradisiaca peel extract at 400 mg/kg body weight (group 5) significantly (P<0.05) decreased serum activities of C Tn-1, Malondialdehyde (MDA) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β). This 400 mg/kg body weight extract (group 5) also showed increase in serum Na/K-ATPase and antioxidant level (catalase and superoxide dismutase). Electrocardiogram revealed flutter waves and histopathology of heart revealed mild necrosis and no inflammation specifying the salvage of cardiomyocytes from the deleterious effects of isoproterenol. The findings in this study demonstrated that Musa paradisiaca peels extract at 400 mg/kg body weight protected the myocardium and exerted cardioprotective effects.
