This dissertation explores the multilingual linguistic landscape in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Specifically, the data collected includes 265 bilingual Arabic-English linguistic objects from two geoterritotial areas, one commercial and one residential. It applies a gestalt or whole-scene approach to their perception and subsequent analysis. To understand their denotational meaning, the linguistic analysis focuses on their choice of semantic and syntactic structures for each language used. To grasp the sociolinguistic nature of their design, the sociolinguistic analysis explores them as multimodal sociolinguistic and socio-structuralist constructs. The linguistic and sociolinguistic analyses enable the evaluation of their pedagogical significance as additional authentic multilingual and multimodal input for the ESL classroom. Finally, the pedagogical analysis focuses on the potential use of multilingual linguistic objects in different ESL educational contexts. Specifically, the pedagogical analysis mines this study's data for their potential impact on communicative competence (e.g., linguistic and pragmatic) and on literacy competence (e.g., skill-based and text-based).
