This dissertation investigates the influence of Christianity on the birth, expansion, principles, practice, and theology of Sufi Islam. This research will include an analysis of well-known Indian and Non-Indian Sufis with a purpose of developing a contextualized methodology for outreach to Sufis in India. The research will use historical, theological, and practical methodology in order to investigate Christian influence on Sufism, and to present these influences as a contextualized methodology for reaching Sufi Muslims. Six primary chapters will support the thesis. Chapter one introduces the significance of the topic, presents the thesis, the purpose, plan, and scope of this dissertation. Chapter two will present the historical development of Sufism. It explains the history of Sufism, including the founder of its faith, beliefs, scriptures, religious philosophy, and theology. A study of specific Sufi principles and practices, theology along with an elaboration of four major Sufi orders that establish standards for Sufism will be highlighted. Chapter three highlights prominent Non-Indian and Indian Sufis. Their contribution to Sufism and the spread of the Islam through a mystical expression of faith will be discussed in this chapter. Chapter four will investigate the Christian influence on Sufism and specific beliefs and practices. This chapter will determine the people, situations, conversations, evidences, and literature that directly and indirectly influenced Sufism. Chapter five provides missiological implications based on this research and illustrates ways to share the Gospel and do ministry among Sufis and Sufi converts. It also provides information concerning challenges in ministry among Sufis. Chapter sixth is the conclusion. It is an assessment for those who desire to do church planting and discipleship ministry among Sufis in India and around the world.
