This study is an investigation of the feelings of power of the ousted presidents of Tunisia and Egypt (Zain Alabdeen ben Ali and Husni Mubarak) as expressed in their three calming speeches during Arab revolution that started in late 2010. In this study, "calming speeches" refers to the speeches delivered by the ousted presidents in their efforts to calm the protestors down and persuade them to cease protesting and considered as acts of refusal to step down. The main framework of this study is Oatey-Spencer's (2008) rapport management framework of four rapport orientations: enhancement, maintenance, neglect, and challenge. The main hypothesis of this study is that over the course of three calming speeches intended as refusals by a high-status S (besieged president) to the demands of a low-status H (protestors) in a high imposition condition (Arab revolution), the percentages of rapport enhancement and rapport challenge strategies will be related to the S's feelings of power. The results of the study confirmed the hypothesis, showing that the higher percentage of rapport enhancement and lower percentage of rapport challenge in the Third and last speech of each president compared to his First and Second speeches indicated a loss of the feeling of power. It is concluded that these results cannot be generalized to other cases but that the methodology introduced in this study warrants further development as a tool for linguistic analysis of refusal speeches.
