Following the demise of ILEA, Hammersmith and Fulham took responsibility for its schools in April 1990. Shortly afterwards the new administration agreed, as part of an overall attempt to raise standards, to implement the 'Schools Make a Difference' (SMAD) project. The project was the first of its kind in the country - an attempt by an LEA in partnership with all its secondary schools to implement a school improvement project backed by appropriate resources.

School Improvement in Practice recounts the story of the 'Schools Make a Difference' project through the eyes of the different stakeholders involved - the Director of Education, the Chief Inspector, school coordinators, headteachers and deputies, the project evaluator and the project manager. Strategies for improvement described in the book include those directly affecting staff, students, parents and the learning environment. Written in a highly readable style, this is an honest and candid account of what worked and what did not.
