Learning to talk, read and write fluently are the most important skills in which a child must engage during their primary years, and are the key to the rest of their school curriculum. This book focuses on contexts for and approaches to the teaching of primary English at Key Stage 2, in the light of the New National Curriculum. Through a series of guided activities, teachers are encouraged to examine their own classrooms as environments for language and literacy development and to reflect upon particular teaching strategies and activities. Key issues covered by the units include an analysis of language and literacy; the processes of language and literacy; the use of topic work; a critical look at classroom environments; an examination of the texts which children read and write; and a discussion of the role of the teacher.
