This thesis shares stories of young American Muslims praying in locations outside of a designated prayer area and/or a mosque. It also explores the deeper discourse of identity, stereotypes, religion, and reclaiming narratives within a society in which the political climate and mainstream media play a major role. Although this project is based in predominantly still photography, it also incorporates video footage including the call to prayer and daily life, a written essay about young Muslims praying in public, and a community engagement project in which I curate images submitted by individuals from around the world through the #PlacesYoullPray on Instagram. This multimedia project attempts to tackle the misconceptions of Muslims and Islam within the United States through visual imagery and prayer. My goal is to encourage a discussion and engage in dialogue about things that are often times overlooked, generalized, or misunderstood.
