Self-Compassion has been derived from the Buddhist tradition and is comprised of self-kindness, common humanity and mindfulness. Based on empirical evidence, self-compassion is positively correlated with psychological and emotional well-being, thus these findings call for the importance of improving an individual's self-compassion. This research examines how self-compassionate individuals from three major religions (Islam, Christianity, Judaism) apply the three components of self-compassion (self-kindness, common humanity, mindfulness) in their lives. The findings of this study increase awareness of the role of self-compassion in diverse groups of individuals, and provide clinicians with a foundational understanding of how to integrate the concepts of religion and self-compassion into their clinical practice. Using 206 completed surveys, the study explored how affiliation with Islam, Christianity, and Judaism impacted levels of self-compassion and its three components of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness. The result of the study did not highlight any significant differences between groups; however, significant results were found within each group. Participants within each group reported significantly higher levels of mindfulness than self-kindness. In addition, participants within the Christian and Jewish groups reported significantly higher levels of mindfulness than common humanity. These findings suggest that utilizing an individual's religious beliefs is an effective way to introduce clients to the experiences of mindfulness.
