This dissertation is the first full-length ethnographic and historical analysis of the Zinjibari diaspora, a group of Swahili-speaking Arabs living in Oman. The Zinjibaris are largely Omani citizens, but they retain deep ties to Zanzibar, an island their ancestors migrated to and ruled in the nineteenth century. Contemporary Zinjibaris imagine themselves as subjects of a once great Omani empire stretching from Zanzibar to the Congo, and use this imagination to authorize themselves as national citizens. The entanglement of the Zinjibaris with the forms of modern sovereign territorial nationalism we recognize today as Tanzania, Kenya, Zanzibar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates thus helps us understand the strong linkages between diaspora, nation and empire. Despite what other Omanis call them, the Zinjibaris in Oman do not wish to be seen primarily as a Zanzibari diaspora; their traumatic exile from Zanzibar is not the basis for a political movement to recapture the state they lost. Instead, Zinjibaris in Oman narrate themselves as an Omani diaspora in East Africa. Their imagination of East African empire and its religious and civilizational mission has been the basis for a self-conception as cosmopolitan Omani national citizens. The research for this dissertation included ethnographic fieldwork in Oman, oral histories collected in Oman and Zanzibar, and use of archives in Zanzibar, London and Geneva, Switzerland.
