This study examined four factors for attitudes towards dating by Iranian and Iranian Americans living in the United States: (a) level of acculturation to mainstream American culture (b) level of acculturation to mainstream Iranian culture (c) religiosity, and (d) gender. Participants were recruited using a non-random method of convenience and snowball sampling within the social network of the researcher and national Iranian American networks. The sample consisted of 149 participants (72 males, 77 females) who completed a demographic questionnaire, the Iran Cultural Life Styles Inventory (ICLSI), and The Dating Characteristic Scale (TDCS). Five hypotheses were tested. The first hypothesis predicted that as immersion into US culture increased, the following dating characteristics are important: love, physical appearance, autonomy, and social skills. The results of the study indicated that love was marginally significance (p=.09) for hypothesis one. The second hypothesis predicted as immersion into the Iranian culture these characteristics are important: social prestige, family background, commitment, housekeeping, age, and ethnicity. The results of the study provided support for the second hypothesis regarding social prestige and ethnicity. The third hypothesis predicated that highly religious individuals would place a high value on dating a person with similar religious background, ethnicity and family background. The results of the study did not support for the third hypothesis. The four hypothesis predicted that females would value education, intellect, financial resources, commitment, and occupation as important factors. The results of the study provided support for the fourth hypothesis. The fifth hypothesis predicted that males would value: physical appearance, ethnicity, housekeeping, chastity and age. The results of the study did not support for the fifth hypothesis.
