This thesis examines a potential link between Shiite fundamentalism and its nuclear program. It uses qualitative research with an inductive approach to address the topic. The thesis analyzes different works of prominent Shiite Mujtahids on Islamic tradition, which are predominantly written in Arabic, although some are translated into English. In addition, the thesis references a wide range of official publications, as well as other studies and reports. Despite their ideological differences, this analysis finds that both fundamental Islamists and fundamental nationalists are regionally and globally expansionist. Because the Islamic Republic embraces Mandism, which calls for ending the earth in the hands of a savior at the End of the Time, it is unlikely to pursue peaceful purposes with its nuclear program. In contradiction to western optimism regarding Rouhani's nuclear policy, Rouhani will not necessarily prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear armed-state in the future. Because Khamenei is accorded semi-divine powers, he is the true decision-maker in Iran, not Rouhani. As a result, Iran's maneuvers in nuclear negotiations signify clearly that it wants to kill time in marathon negotiations with P5+1 in order to gain more concessions from the West while still progressing toward its long-term nuclear goals. In this endeavor, Iran imitates the North Korean mode. In conclusion, it may not be wise for the international community to allow this theocratic regime, which violates the rights and freedoms of its opponents politically or religiously, to promote and possess nuclear capabilities.
