This chapter reviews the approaches to the quantum description of the phase difference and presents basic definitions from classical and quantum optics. The chapter also discusses why there is no straightforward quantum translation of phase and phase difference. The different approaches to quantum relative phase are presented in the chapter. The improvement of interferometric measurements is a relevant stimulus impelling the study of quantum phase. The chapter considers the problem of precise phase-shift detection. The chapter shows how the main proposals for the quantum single-mode phase emerge from two-mode formalisms when one of the modes is in a suitably chosen reference state. How the most of the relevant quantum phase formalisms emerge from the two-mode approaches is also shown. No phase-difference approaches can be derived from the same one-mode formalisms they define. The chapter presents an overview of different proposals about how the relative phase or phase difference should be described in quantum terms.
