This study examines West Indian women immigrants--Jamaican, Trinidadian-Tobagonian, Guyanese, and Belizean--to Los Angeles, California to see how they fit in this ethnically diverse city/county and today's global economy. Using the theory of globalization and its effect on the feminization of labor, migration, and poverty, this study analyzes the extent to which these immigrant groups represent global trends. This research also explores the political, economic, and social climate of each sending country chosen for the study to gain insight into why some groups migrate while others do not. West Indians generally immigrate to big cities in the United States, such as New York and Miami, so studying their migration pattern to Los Angeles, California will demonstrate if this city and state is, in fact, a port of entry for this group. This study uses both qualitative and quantitative data. I conducted face to face interviews with twelve members of various West Indian transnational organizations and entrepreneurs that cater to this group of immigrants to learn about their transnational ties, why they chose to settle in Los Angeles; and how they perceive the West Indians that migrated and settled in Los Angeles. The quantitative data come from the U.S. Census 2000 and U.S. Census 2000 5PUMs. The information provided immigration patterns to United States, California, and Los Angeles, length of time in United States, educational attainment, types of occupations, personal income, household income, marital status, and household composition. This information helps to ascertain to what extent the West Indians in Los Angeles are similar and different from those that migrated and settled in New York City.Through comparative analysis between the groups that were selected for this study, it was found that each set of West Indian women have traits that make them unique in many ways. This study also illustrates that West Indian women are like most women globally in that they are concentrated in female-dominated occupations. They are the predominant gender to migrate to the United States. However, they are faring well economically.
