مقدمه: درحال حاضر جامعه ما به طور همزمان شاهد افزایش تعداد سالمندان وکاهش میزان ازدواج می باشد؛ در صورت ادامه این روند درآینده نزدیک تعداد سالمندان هرگز ازدواج نکرده بطور قابل ملاحظه ای افزایش خواهد یافت. این درحالی است که اطلاعات چندانی درمورد ابعاد مختلف زندگی آنان در دسترس نمی باشد. هدف از پژوهش حاضر واکاوی تجربه زیسته سالمندان هرگز ازدواج نکرده می باشد.روش: این مطالعه با رویکردکیفی و روش پدیدارشناسی هرمنوتیک در سال 1398 انجام شد. به منظور گردآوری تجربیات زیسته، مصاحبه عمیق با 12 مرد و زن سالمند هرگز ازدواج نکرده که به روش گلوله برفی انتخاب شده بودند، به عمل آمد. مضامین با استفاده از روش ون منن استخراج، توصیف و تفسیر گردید.نتایج: مشارکت‌کنندگان در این مطالعه شامل هشت زن و چهار مرد 60 تا 78 ساله با میانگین سنی 68.83 سال (انحراف معیار 4.74) بودند. نیمی از مشارکت‌کنندگان در هر دو گروه مردان و زنان تحصیلات دانشگاهی داشتند. شرکت‌کنندگان در این مطالعه تجربیات خوشایند و ناخوشایندی را از زندگی با تجرد در دوران سالمندی بیان کردند. واکاوی تجربه زیسته این شرکت‌کنندگان نمایانگر شش مضمون اصلی شامل: "آرامش در استقلال، جدال با تنهایی، خودساختگی، احساس افسوس، روابط قوی اجتماعی و تجربه انگ‌های اجتماعی" بود. سالمندان مرد غیر شاغل و سالمندانی که تجرد آن‌ها جنبه اجباری داشت، بیشتر مستعد درک جنبه‌های ناخوشایند این پدیده مانند احساس تنهایی و افسوس بودند، در حالی که زنان سالمند هرگز ازدواج نکرده در مقایسه با مردان شبکه‌های اجتماعی قوی‌تری داشته و کمتر در معرض احساس تنهایی قرار داشتند. مشارکت‌کنندگانی که دارای تجربه استقلال زودرس و تجرد اختیاری بودند، بهتر خود را با شرایط تجرد در دوران سالمندی وفق داده و مفاهیمی مثل آرامش در استقلال و خودساختگی را به‌طور بارزتری گزارش نموده‌اند.نتیجه‌گیری: ادامه تجرد در سنین سالمندی پدیده‌ای است پیچیده و چند بعدی که معنا و مفهوم آن می تواند برای افراد مختلف، متفاوت باشد. سالمندان هرگز ازدواج نکرده علی‌رغم اینکه با مشکلاتی مثل تنهایی و انگ‌های اجتماعی مواجه می‌شوند ولی در عین حال می‌توانند در زندگی احساس رضایت و آرامش داشته باشند. نتایج این مطالعه می‌تواند به متخصصین مختلف در زمینه سالمندی مثل روانپزشکان، روانشناسان و مددکاران برای فهم عمیق‌تر جنبه‌های مختلف زندگی سالمندان هرگز ازدواج نکرده کمک نماید. در عین حال برای تبیین دقیق روند ادامه تجرد تا دوران سالمندی و مداخله در آن نیاز به مطالعات کیفی بیشتر خصوصاً به روش تئوری پایه می باشد.کلمات کلیدی: سالمند، تجرد، هرگز ازدواج نکرده، پدیدارشناسی، هرمنوتیک، سالمند شناسی

Introduction: At the present time, our society concurrently witnesses an increase in the older adult population and a decrease in marriage rate. If this trend continues, the number of never married older adults will rise noticeably in the near future. Meanwhile, there is scanty information on the different aspects of their lives. The aim of the present study is to explore the lived experience of never-married older adults.Methods: Using a qualitative approach and a hermeneutic method, the lived experiences were collected and analyzed by unstructured deep interviews with 12 male and female never married older participants. These were selected by purposive snowball sampling method in 2019-2020. The themes were extracted, described, and interpreted by the method recommended by Van Manen.Findings: The participants of the current study were 8 women and 4 men aged 60 to 78 with a mean age of 68.83 years (SD= 4.74). Half of either group of the men and women had university education. They reported pleasant and unpleasant experiences of staying single in their lives. Reflection on the lived experiences of the participants revealed the following 6 themes: “peace in independence, combating loneliness, self-development, regret, strong social relations, and social stigmatization”. The unemployed men and those older adults with involuntary singleness were more exposed to unpleasant experiences of the phenomenon such as loneliness and regret. While the never married older women participated in stronger social networks and felt less lonely compared to men. The participants who had the experiences of early independence and voluntary singleness showed a better adaptation with the conditions of singleness in their later life and reported higher levels of peace and self-development.Conclusion: Remaining single in later life is a complex, multidimensional phenomenon whose meaning can be dissimilar for different individuals. Although the never married older adults encounter loneliness and social stigmatization, they can experience feelings of peace and satisfaction. The findings of this study can assist professionals in the field of aging such as psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers to have a deeper understanding of the never married older adult׳s life. Meanwhile, exploring the process of remaining single until later life and also the necessary interventions entail further researches using qualitative methods like the grounded theory.Keywords: older adults, singleness, never married, phenomenology, hermeneutics, gerontology
