The present study aimed to investigate the language of evaluation in media discourse reflecting the United States Presidential Election 2020 through the application of the Appraisal framework of Martin and White, which was developed within the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) paradigm of M. A. K. Halliday and his colleagues, extending the SFL account of the interpersonal metafunction. The Appraisal’s main component, the Attitude system, divided into three regions of Affect, Judgment, and Appreciation, was selected as the tool of analysis. The purpose of this study was to arrive at broad implications and interpretations by analyzing news reports at the micro-level. Three sets of news reports were selected from different news agencies with opposing political leanings. One report in each set was taken from Fox News, which is thought to be affiliated with the right wing (i.e. the Republicans) and pro-Trump, and the other report was taken from CNN, which is considered to be in close association with the left wing (i.e. the Democrats) and pro-Biden. The first set of reports was concerned with Donald Trump’s interview with NBC in Miami on October 15th, 2020; the second one was in relation to Joe Biden’s early victory speech on November 8th, and the third set was a checklist of Biden’s performance during his first 100 days of presidency. The analysis of these sets of reports showed that, as expected, while trying to uphold the pretense of objectivity by not indulging too much in the use of the terms pertaining to the Affect region, CNN mostly evaluated Biden in positive terms while blaming Trump; Fox News tried to counterbalance the negative evaluations of Trump with positive ones, and Biden’s positive evaluations with negative ones. The analysis of evaluative patterns in these news discourse samples suggested associations between the language used in media and the political agenda each news agency is pursuing. The study has a number of implications for the researchers interested in the media discourse analysis, in particular those focusing on the language of evaluation and the Appraisal framework

هدف مطالعه حاضر بررسی زبان ارزیابی در گفتمان رسانه‌ای با موضوع انتخابات ریاست جمهوری ایالات متحده 2020 از طریق استفاده از چارچوب ارزیابی مارتین و وایت است که بر پایه‌ی زبان‌شناسی عملکردی سیستمیک مایکل هلیدی و همکارانش توسعه یافته است. ابزار تجزیه و تحلیل این مطالعه، مولفه اصلی چارچوب ارزیابی یعنی سیستم نگرش است که به سه زیرمجموعه‌ی تأثیر، قضاوت و قدردانی تقسیم شده است. این مطالعه قصد دارد تا با تجزیه و تحلیل گزارش‌های خبری در سطح خرد به مفاهیم و تفاسیر گسترده دست یابد. سه مجموعه گزارش خبری از خبرگزاری‌های مختلف با گرایش‌های سیاسی مخالف انتخاب شد. یک گزارش در هر مجموعه از خبرگزاری فاکس نیوز گرفته شده است که تصور می‌شود وابسته به جناح راست (یعنی جمهوری‌خواهان) و طرفدار ترامپ است و گزارش دیگر از سی‌ان‌ان گرفته شده است که در ارتباط نزدیک با جناح چپ (یعنی دموکرات ها) و طرفدار بایدن می‌باشد. اولین گزارش مربوط به مصاحبه دونالد ترامپ با خبرگزاری ان‌بی‌سی در میامی در تاریخ 15 اکتبر 2020 است. گزارش دوم مربوط به سخنرانی زودهنگام پیروزی انتخاباتی جو بایدن در 8 نوامبر است و گزارش سوم چک‌لیست عملکرد بایدن در 100 روز اول ریاست جمهوری او است. تجزیه و تحلیل این مجموعه گزارش‌ها نشان داد، همان‌طور که انتظار می‌رفت، با وجود تظاهر به بی‌طرفی از طریق استفاده نکردن زیاد از اصطلاحات مربوط به زیرمجموعه‌ی تأثیر، خبرگزاری سی‌ان‌ان بیشتر بایدن را مثبت ارزیابی کرده است در حالی که ترامپ را سرزنش می‌کند. فاکس نیوز تلاش کرده است تا ارزیابی‌های منفی ترامپ را با ارزیابی‌های مثبت و ارزیابی‌های مثبت بایدن را با ارزیابی‌های منفی خنثی کند. تجزیه و تحلیل الگوهای ارزیابی در این نمونه‌های گفتمان خبری حاکی از وجود ارتباط بین زبان استفاده شده در گزارش‌ها و دستورکار سیاسی آن خبرگزاری است. این مطالعه دارای پیامدهای متعددی برای پژوهشگران در زمینه تجزیه و تحلیل کلام رسانه‌ای است، خصوصا آن‌هایی که بر روی زبان ارزیابی و چارچوب ارزیابی مارتین و وایت تمرکز دارند.
