Vocabulary knowledge is often viewed as a critical tool for foreign language learners because a limited vocabulary in a second language impedes successful communication. Underscoring the importance of vocabulary acquisition. This study compared the effectiveness of context and dictionary use on vocabulary learning and retention of EFL students at pre-intermediate proficiency levels. The present study was carried out at Atlas English institute in Tabriz city, Iran in 1397 summer term. It was an educational research study conducted to approximate the conditions of a true experimental study; however, without the control or manipulation of all variables, it is considered a quasi-experimental research design. It was an empirical study and it estimated the casual impact of an intervention on its target population without random assignment. The purpose of the study was comparing the effects of context use and dictionary use on vocabulary learning and retention of Iranian EFL learners. The current research involved four variables: two independent and two dependant variables. The independent variables of the study were using context and dictionary, and the dependant variables were vocabulary learning and retention. The participants were 60 Iranian EFL learners between the ages of 12 to 15 in three classes who were at the pre-intermediate proficiency level according to the results of Key English Test (KET) test. They were divided into three groups: experimental group1, experimental group 2 and control group. KET and vocabulary pre-test were given to them before the treatment. In the experimental group1, the students were supposed to guess the meanings of the vocabularies through the context and in the experimental group 2, the students were supposed to use dictionary to find the meaning of the words out during class session, while in the control group, word meanings were provided by the teacher. After 10 sessions, the students of the three groups were asked to take immediate post-test. With a time lapse of seven weeks delayed post-test was hold. The normality assumption was also calculated and the results of One-Sample Kolmogorov- Smirnov Test revealed that the data were normally distributed. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and independent T-Test were used to answer the research questions. The overall findings indicated that using context and dictionary has positive effect on vocabulary learning and retention among Iranian pre-intermediate EFL students in English. The results of present study have main implications for EFL learners and teachers as well as curriculum developers.

دانش لغت اغلب بعنوان ابزار انتقادی برای زبان آموزان دیده میشود زیرامحدودیت لغت در زبان دوم مانع ارتباط موفق می شود .هدف از این مطالعه، بررسی ومقایسه ی تاثیر استفاده از متن ودیکشنری برروی یادگیری وبخاطرسپردن لغت زبان آموزان انگلیسی در سطح مهارت پیش متوسطه بود.این تحقیق در آموزشگاه انگلیسی اطلس در شهرتبریز،ایران در یک ترم تابستانی در سال1397 انجام گرفت.آن یک تحقیق اموزشی بود که بخاطرتخمین زدن اوضاع یک مطالعه ی صحیخ تجربی انجام گرفت.اگرچه بدون کنترل و دستکاری متغیرها یک تحقیق نیمه تجربی بود.آن یک تحقیق تجربی بود و تاثیر مداخله هاروی آمارهدف رابدون تعیین تصادفی تخمین زد.هدف از این تحقیق مقایسه ی تاثیرات استفاده از متن و دیکشنری روی یادگیری وبخاطرسپردن لغات زبان اموزان ایرانی بود .این مطالع د متغیروابسته و دو متغیر وابسته داشت.متغیرهای وابسته استفاده از متن و دیکشنری بودندو متغیرهای مستقل یادگیری و بخاطرسپردن لغات بودند.شرکت کنندگان در این تحقیق شامل60 زبان اموز درمحدوده ی سنی بین12 تا15سال در سه کلاس بودند که براساس نتایج آزمون کت درسطح پیش متوسطه قرارداشتند.دانش آموزان به سه گروه آزمایشی و کنترلی تقسیم شدند) دوگروه آزمایشی و یک گروه کنترلی.(هرسه گروه،پیش از آغاز دوره ی آموزشی،آزمون کت و پیش آزمون لغت را گذراندند.درطول جلسات، درگروه آزمایشی اول،قراربوددانش آموزان معانی لغات را از روی متن حدس بزنندو در گروه آزمایشی دوم،دانش آموزان قراربود معانی لغات را بااستفاده از دیکشنری بیابند،درحالیکه گروه کنترلی صرفا روش عادی خودشان را ادامه دادند .بعداز ده جلسه،از دانش آموزان هرسه گروه خواسته شد تا در پس آزمون میانی شرکت کنند .نتایج آزمون ناپارامتریک کولموکروف_اسمیرنوف نیز نشان داد که توزیع داده ها به صورت نرمال انجام شده است.تحلیل کواریانس وآزمون تی تست مستقل برای جواب دادن به سوال های تحقیق مورد استفاده قرار گرفتند .یافته ای کلی تحقیق نشان داد که استفاده از متن و دیکشنری تاثیر مثبتی برروی یادگیری و بخاطر سپردن لغت در زبان اموزان ایرانی در سطح پیش متوسطه دارد .نتایج این مطالعه میتواندبرای زبان اموزان و مدرسان زبان انگلیسی و توسعه دهندگان برنامه ی ترمی کاربرد داشته باشد
