Karavezir Seyyid Mehmed (Qarāvezīr Seyyid Meḥmed) Paşa (1148-95/1735-81), an Ottoman statesman and grand vizier, was born in 1148 (1735-6) in Arapsun (today's Gülşehir, in the province of Nevşehir, in central Turkey). Since his father, Ali (ʿAlī) Efendi, traced his lineage to the Prophet Muḥammad, he was also known as Seyyid (Sayyid, a title of honour for the Prophet's descendants). Under the patronage of his uncle, Süleyman Ağa (Süleymān Āghā), head cook ( Aşçıbaşı , Āşcībaşī) at Topkapı Sarayı, he entered the palace in 1160 (1747), where
