This chapter discusses the methaqualone. Methaqua1one is 2-methyl -3-o-to1y 1-4 (3H) -quinazolinone. Methaqualone occurs as a white, odorless, crystalline powder. The infrared spectrum of methaqualone is presented in this chapter. Methaqualone exhibits characteristic ultraviolet absorption properties in different solvents. Methaqualone does not exhibit any native fluorescence. The mass spectrum of methaqualone in the form of a bar graph is presented in this chapter. The melting range of methaqualone is dependent on the rate of heating. Methaqualone exhibits no optical activity when analyzed at a series of mercury and sodium spectral lines. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern of methaqualone was obtained on a Phillips scanning diffractometer using copper radiation coupled with Nickel filter. Methaqualone is synthesized by the reaction scheme explored in the chapter. Anthranilic acid is reacted with acetyl chloride to yield n-acetylanthranilic acid.
