An Investigation of the Relationship between Personality Types and Politeness Strategies in EFL Learners

The two most examined dimensions of personality that appear to have an affective influence on language learning are extroversion and introversion. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between personality types and the use of politeness strategies. In this regard, a correlational design was used to scrutinize the preference of introverts and extroverts in using the politeness strategies of bald on-record, positive, negative, and off-record politeness as well as the weak politeness strategies of positive and negative through the realization of speech acts of request and refusal. At first, 52 Iranian EFL learners, aged between 19 and 22, were selected from the pool of 80 students according to their scores in advanced version of Cambridge English Language Assessment proficiency inventory. Then, these participants were divided into the two groups of extroversion and introversion, based on their scores in Eysenck Personality Inventory. Ensuing this, participants took two versions of Discourse Completion Tests, prepared based on the two above mentioned speech acts. Findings showed that there was not significant correlation, P0.05, between personality types and politeness and the weak politeness strategies (Ppolitness=0.36 and P weak politeness=0.35). However, it was revealed that there were significant differences between not only introverts but also extroverts in utilization of positive, negative and bald on the record politeness strategies in both speech acts. Moreover, the analysis indicated that there was significant difference between both within group of introverts and within group of extroverts in utilization of positive weak politeness strategy. Finally, it was construed that extroverts overuse combinations of different categories of politeness strategies and exhibit considerable variation in the use of politeness strategies in contrast to introverts. The findings of the present study can equip EFL teachers and learners to take into account individual differences in personality types and the use of appropriate teaching methodologies and learning strategies in order to enhance their knowledge of politeness strategies.
برون گرایی و درون بعنوان دو بعد از شخصیت تاثیر بسزایی در یادگیری زبان دارند .هدف از این تحقیق، بررسی رابطه بین انواع شخصیت و استفاده از استراتژی های ادب است .در این راستا، تحقیقی از نوع همبستگی برای بررسی تمایل افراد درونگرا و برونگرا در استفاده از استراتژیهای ادب :مستقیم، مثبت ، منفی و غیر مستقیم و استراتژیهای ادب ضعیف :مثبت و منفی بکار گرفته شد که این استراتژیهای ادب و ادب ضعیف توسط دو ابزار سخن شناسی درخواست کردن و امتناع ورزیدن محقق شدند .در ابتدا، 52 زبان آموز ایرانی، در سنین 19 تا 22 از جمع 80 زبان آموز، با توجه به نمرات بدست آمده در نسخه پیشرفته آزمون کمبریج انتخاب شدند .سپس، این شرکت کنندگان به دو گروه برون گرایی و درون گرایی بر اساس نمره خود در پرسشنامه شخصیتی آیزنک تقسیم شدند .متعاقب این، شرکت کنندگان دو نسخه از آزمون تکمیل گفتمان، بر اساس دو ابزار سخن شناسی ذکر شده را جواب دادند .یافته ها نشان داد که ارتباط معنی داری با مقدار معنی دار بزرگتر از0.05 ، بین نوع شخصیت و استراتژیهای ادب و ادب ضعیف وجود ندارد .با این حال، معلوم شد که تفاوت معنی داری بین نه تنها افراد درونگرا بلکه بین افراد برونگرا در استفاده ازاستراتژیهای ادب :مثبت، منفی و مستقیم در هر دو ابزارسخن شناسی وجود دارد .علاوه بر این، تجزیه و تحلیل نشان داد که تفاوت معنی داری بین افراد داخل گروه درونگرا وبین افراد داخل گروه برونگرا در استفاده از استراتژی ادب ضعیف مثبت وجود دارد .در نهایت، یافته های این تحقیق نشان داد که افراد برونگرا نسبت به افراد درونگرا از تنوع بیشتری درترکیب دسته های مختلف استراتژی های ادب استفاده میکنند .یافته های تحقیق حاضر می تواند معلمان زبان انگلیسی و زبان آموزان را از تفاوت های فردی موجود درنوع شخصیت، استفاده از روش های مناسب تدریس و استراتژیهای یادگیری به منظور افزایش دانش در استفاده از استراتژی های ادب آگاه سازد
