The first report was submitted to Congress in 1847. Annual reports were printed in pamphlet from up to 1853, but in the volume for that year the essential portion of the Contents of the preceding seven reports was prinred and this is now considered as the first of a set Smithsonian reports. of Annual report 1886.pt.1, p.487.
