Background and objectives: discourse is the highest and most complex level of linguistic representation which is defined as the linguistic structure beyond the sentence level. Regarding the level of discourse analysis and the absence of any task for evaluating discourse in Persian language, the objective of the present study was to develop valid tasks for analysis of monologue discourses based on Fredrickson discourse production model in Persian language and comparing the discourse ability in individuals suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) based on the levels of discourse injury in Fredrickson model. Materials and Methods: the present research consisted of two sub-studies. In the first sub-study, which was a qualitative one, conducted using Delphi method, the measures of analyzing Persian monologue discourses in adults were developed. The population of the study in this stage were experts of linguistics and those of speech and language pathology whom were selected using snowball sampling method. In the second sub-study conducted in a methodological and developmental research, valid tasks of analyzing Persian discourses were developed and their psychometric characteristics were determined. Then, in the other part which was a sectionalanalytical study conducted in a non-experimental approach, the discourse of the two groups of normal adults and adults suffering from traumatic brain injury selected using purposive sampling method, were compared to each other. In this stage, firstly, discourses were transcribed and then each measure of discourse analysis was coded based on the guide developed in the first sub-study. Afterwards, the measures obtained from the two groups entered into the SPSS software program and the data were compared using t-test and Mann-Whitney test. At last, the model of discourse damage of individuals suffering from traumatic injury was determined based on Frederickson discourse production model. Results: Investigating the content validity of measures and tasks indicated the total approval of the experts. The construct validity for both tasks was obtained as significant (p<0.002). The results of investigating the test-retest reliability showed that the task of the narrative discourse analysis enjoys higher reliability than that of the persuasive discourse. Further, the results of investigating the intrarater reliability (correlation more than 0.93 ) and inter-rater reliability (correlation than 0.82 ) in discourse analyses indicated the consistency of measurements. Comparing the discourse of adults suffering from traumatic brain injury and that of normal adults indicated that in the narrative discourse, in sentential complexity, verbal output errors, lexical cohesion, total cohesion ties, and coherence measures (p<0.001) and in the persuasive discourse, in sentential complexity, conjunction, substitution and ellipsis, lexical cohesion, total cohesion ties, and coherence measures (p<0.005), there are significant differences between the two groups. Conclusion: the present study has originated from a clinical need based on finding a tool which can is able to evaluate communication skills in acquired language disorders. In this line, a tool for evaluating criteria related to discourses analysis for the use of researchers and therapists was introduced. Obtaining more accurate descriptions of discourse may result in a better understanding of the nature of communicative inability which influences individuals with discourse disorders and can help therapists to develop their strategies for helping individuals with damaged discourse to cope with this inability.
