Objective: To investigate the activity pattern of the lumbo-pelvic extensor muscles during prone hip extension in subjects with and without history of hamstring strain injury Methods: A convenience sample of 10 athletes with hamstring strain and 10 subjects without history of hamstring strain who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria participated in the study. The electromyography (EMG) signal amplitude of right and left erector spinea (RES, LES), gluteus maximus (GM), biceps femoris (BF) and semitendinosus (ST) was measured during prone hip extension (PHE). The average of peak amplitude (AMP) of the muscles in three measurements was normalized to maximum voluntary exertion (MVE) of each muscle and used for statistical analysis. Data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVAs.Results: No significant difference was found in EMG signal of the tested muscles between subjects with and without history of hamstring strain expect for ST muscle (p= 0.003). No significant difference was also found in LES, GM, BF and ST EMG signal timing between subjects with and without history of hamstring strain. The results of this study showed that the activity pattern is same in both groups except for ST muscle. Conclusion: In overall, the same activation pattern of the lumbo-pelvic muscles during PHE was found in athletes with and without history of hamstring strain.Key words: Activation pattern, Prone hip extension, Athletes, Electromyography, Hamstring strain injury.University
