The rise of the human population has resulted in the spread of ancient cities into formerly uninhabited territories. The development of an urban area without adequate consideration of the geographical, geomorphological, and geotechnical characteristics of the sites will result in irreversible damage. Construction in areas with active faults or construction of important structures on soils having already experienced old landslides are among the cases that have a high potential risk for human lives and finances. In this thesis, a numerical investigation will be applied to study effects of an old landslide in the city of Tabriz (i.e., an ancient landslide in south of Basmanj) on the geotechnical characteristics of the site, where the marl soil in the site has been severely disturbed due to landslides, and various joints have been created in the soil and gypsum layers. To this aim, a random finite element procedure using the Monte-Carlo simulation will be employed to analyze slope stability of the site, and the worst distribution of the shear strength parameters will be chosen for further investigations. The random finite element analysis will be done using the OPTUM G2 software. At the next step, using the 3D finite element modeling, the behavior of a building based on two different types of foundations (Raft and strip) will be studied. 3D finite element modeling will be applied using the PLAXIS 3D software where both of the static and seismic conditions will be considered in the research. The geotechnical properties of the modeled site will be extracted from 2D probabilistic simulation of stability analysis (done by OPTUM G2 in previous step). Results of building behavior on the two different foundation will be discussed. Using Optum G2 software and Monte-Carlo simulation, it is shown that the geotechnical properties of the assumed site has experienced a considerable distortion, which It is in correspondence with the geotechnical in-situ observations. The achieved results appears that application of the raft foundation for the expected building improves both static and seismic behavior. For static loading condition, the existent strip foundation has not adequate capacity to bear settlements and un-allowable settlements will be happened. However, application of the raft foundation leads to settlements 3 times lower than the admissible values. Pattern of the settlements for these two foundations are distinctive as well, whereas the strip footing leads to non-uniform settlements, building with raft foundation will involvement uniform deformation. Seismic and static analyses show that the application of raft foundation has more efficiency in static condition in comparison with seismic loading situation.
