This thesis takes for its object of analysis the contributing internal and external factors in fabrication of unreliability in three selected novels and their adapted film versions: Atonement, Gone Girl and Life of Pi. In twentieth century authors utilize uncommon ways of narration in order to baffle and confuse their readers; first introduced to the literary public by Wayne C. Booth in his groundbreaking text The Rhetoric of Fiction, the unreliable narrator is one of the major narration techniques of recent years .The major articulations of this research are intended to scrutinize the roots of narrators unreliability in the light of their traumatic life experience, cultural and social impact of their society and individuals various psychological disorders. The research will be carried out through close reading of the texts and library based data in order to acknowledge the various factors leading the narrators to be qualified as unreliable. This thesis will providev pertinent evidence in order to reveal the fact that narrators do not have complete control over their created unreliability and untrustworthiness was not solely born out of characteristic features of the narrators as a matter of fact there are other influential external factors imposing the unreliability on them. Lying as a prominent social phenomenon will be analyzed and the psychological disorders triggering deception in narrators will be studied as significant internal factors; it will also be probed whether their deception is conscious and deliberately done or unconsciously and based on misreading of the circumstances. Next social and cultural context of the works and the impact of media in constructing the reality will be analyzed and it will be revealed whether in the era of social network there is objectivity in truth. The study will conclude that various factors impose on the reliability of the narrators.
