Abstract:Ooencyrtus telenomicida Vassiliev and Ooencyrtus fecundus Ferrier & Voegele (Hymenoptera, Encyrtidae) are egg parasitoids of Eurygaster integriceps Puton (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae). These species are sympatric that means they live together in cereal fields, and have widely overlapping niches, hence competitive displacement of one by another species is expected. However, in most natural habitats, they could to coexist peacefully and no one is not replaced by the other. Therefore, they need some ways to avoid ecological exclusion. In this study, direct competition between larvae was investigated by two separate experiments. In the first experiment, multiparasitism was studied by simultaneous release of equal number of the two species at different densities and parasitoid/host ratios. In the second experiment, sequential release of an inexperienced female of the two species with different time intervals from 3 h to 10 d was investigated. In addition, thermal requirements, as well as life history of the two species, also was studied as indirect characteristics of the competition. Insect cultures were kept in a greenhouse in 25-28 °C, 60±5% RH, and 16 L: 8 D photoperiod. Life history of the two species was investigated in so called conditions. Standard error of the stable population growth parameters was estimated by 10000 bootstrap replicates. Developmental time of O. telenomicida and O. fecundus was 4.21 ± 0.111 and 4.69 ± 0.074 d respectively. Adult longevity was also 50.60 ± 5.21 and 56.62 ± 5.25 d and overall life time (immature plus adult life time) took 73.04 and 80.08 d, for above mentioned species respectively. oviposition period was 18.4 ± 2.01 and 16.79 ± 1.14 d respectively. The sex ratio of O. telenomicida was 0.5, while a telytokous population of O. fecundus with no male cohort or progeny was encountered. The thermal requirements of the two species was studied separately for both gregarious and singleton individuals at four temperatures including 20, 23, 26 and 30 ± 1 °C. On the basis of the Ikemoto & Takai method, thermal constant and lower thermal threshold of O. telenomicida were 172.16 ± 0.507 DD and 14.47 ± 0.001 °C in singleton wasps, and 192.76 ± 0.439 DD and 13.27 ± 0.001 °C for gregarious progeny respectively. There was no significant difference between males and females. Thermal constant and threshold of O. fecundus females was 185.38 ± 0.713 DD and 14.12 ± 0.002 °C for singltones and 203.67 ± 0.845 DD and 13.28 ± 0.002 °C for gregarious progyny. Eight to 11 lower DD requirements of O. telenomicida provide an advantage of one day faster development in a moderate temperature of 25 °C. The multiparasitism experiment in 3h to 10 d intervals showed a 2.35-fold advantage of O. telenomicida over O. fecundus. A relative increase in parasitism rate of the second invader was observed in 2 to 7 d intervals. The simultaneous parasitism by the two species showed a 3-fold advantage of O. telenomicida in lower densities, which it enhanced to 15-fold at higher parasitoid densities. Overall results of this study revealed advantage of bisexual population of O. telenomicida over telytokous population of O. fecundus, which in higher densities it may also lead to exclusion of the latter, although such densities on host clutches are seldom expected in field conditions. Moreover, the results of competition of the two bisexual populations is still unknown and may be different.
