AbstractIn recent years, energy demand has increased significantly in over the world and environmental issues have become very important due to the harmful effects of global warming caused by the use of fossil energy sources. Therefore, designing more efficient energy conversion systems, using renewable energy and improving the performance and efficiency of existing energy systems have been prioritized. In order to identify the real potential of improving energy conversion systems, more analysis on exergy destruction and consider the interaction between the components of a system, in addition to energy and exergy analysis, advanced exergy analysis is needed. So the purpose of this research is to investigate the performance and evaluate the improvement potential of the high temperature Kalina cycle from the viewpoint of advanced exergy using EES software. In the present study, the results show that more than 82% of the exergy destruction of the system is endogenous, and about 47% of it is avoidable due to the existing technical advances. Also, about 45% of the total exergy destruction can be avoided, which indicates a significant improvement potential for the system. For all cycle components except recuperator 1, endogenous exergy destruction values are higher than exogenous exergy destruction values. This means that in all components, most of the exergy destruction is caused by the irreversibility of the component itself, and there is a weak relationship between the cycle components. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on internal irreversibility of components in order to improve performance. The conventional exergy analysis considers the improvement priority for evaporator, turbine, recuperator 2, condensor 1, preheater, condenser 2 and pump 2, respectively. While by considering the amount of endogenous avoidable exergy destruction, it is necessary to focus first on the turbine, then on the evaporator, recuperator 2, condenser 1, condenser 2, pump 2 and preheater. In both conventional and advanced exergy analysis, exergy destruction for recuperator 1 and pump 1 is negligible.
