Today, the plastic injection molding process is one of the main processes for the production of plastic parts. Therefore, plastic injection molds are manufactured and plastic parts are produced. It takes a lot of time and money to manufacture plastic injection molds. Also, 3D printing processe is one of the rapid prototyping processes, but the part produced by this process does not have the same properties and strength as part produced by plastic injection molding process.Hence in this study, The possibility of making the injection mold cavity by FDM 3D printing process was investigated and the durability of the injection mold was studied experimentally. In this method, the mold cavities are produced quickly and at a meager cost, and it is possible to modify and change them quickly. Initially, a steel frame of injection mold was designed and fabricated. In the next step, by using a 3D printer, 6 cavities were printed using PLA Bioplastic, which has high strength, low thermal expansion, good layer adhesion, and high thermal resistance, in three different layer thicknesses of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 mm and with layer-by-layer raster angles of (0°,90°) and (0°, 45°, 90°, -45°) with 100% infill density. The printed cavities were assembled on the steel frame of mold and the injection process was performed with PP polymer, one of the most widely used polymers in the plastic industry. The plastic injection process was performed up to 50 times on each cavity. The thickness of the molded specimens was measured by micrometer and the dimensional and geometric conditions of the cavities were measured after 50 injection molding shots by using the 3D scanner. The lowest variation of molded parts thickness during the injection molding process was observed for the cavities printed with 0.1mm layer thickness. The 3D scanning indicated that the 3D printed cavity with a layer thickness of 0.1mm and a layer-by-layer raster angle of (0°,90°) showed the lowest deformation and erosion. The results of injection molding tests and standard compression tests showed that the layer thickness of 0.1mm with layer-by-layer raster angles of (0°,90°) and the layer thickness of 0.2mm with layer-by-layer raster angles of (0°,45°, 90°, -45°) offer the best performance of mold durability in terms of deformation and layer delamination and compressive strength among all samples.
