#Iran, as a developing nation, is characterized by a very high rate of population growth. The large increases in the Iranian population and in family size are related to the process of modernization. The question was whether an inverse relationship exists between the modernization process and the rate of population increase and family aize in Iran. The relationship of three variables of the modernization process, namely, urbanization, industrialization and education, to population increase and size was investigated for the Iranian provinces as well as for the whole of Iran for for the period of time between 1966 and 1976. Ut was found that the modernization scale score )MSS( and family size were negatively correlated for 1966, although the relationship was not statistically significant. Likewise, for 1976 there was a negative correlation between MSS and family size but not to a satistically significant level. On the other hand, the MSS and perecentage concentration of total population statistics for both 1966 and 1976 were directly correlated to a satistically significant extent. It was concluded that the process of modernization alone cannot resolve the problem of high birth rates in Iran. Social changes should be instituted to curb the population problem of Iran.
