This book lays down the results of a cruise in 1901 to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with the objective of collecting good samples of the natural history and ethnological data; special attention was paid to the collection of small mammals and they managed to find 16 new species. The chapters of this book notice a separate Island visited were Barren Island, Port Blair, Macpherson, Strait-South Andaman and Rutland Island, the Cinques and little Andaman, Kar Nicobar, Tilanchong, Trinkat, Nankauri, Kamorta, Kachal, little Nicobar, Pulo Milo, Kondul, great Nicobar and its coasts. The book ends with 7 chapters on the Island and its inhabitants, the aborigines, the Nicobaries, an old account of Kar Nicobar, customs of the Kar Nicobaries and the fauna of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The book has 11 appendices that discuss the weather in the Andamans, the forests, the produce, census, government schools, flora, trade and barter. This book has 78 illustrations and photographs. This book is a part of the Imperial gazetteer of India provincial series. It is a very concise book that offers notices on all aspects of the Islands. The topics discussed are physical aspects, general history, population and its characteristics (which include ceremonies and ritual), industry, Administration, currency, flora, fauna, agriculture, commerce etc.
