Food studies, though important and overflowing with new value and lenses, are still relatively new in academic studies. Even rarer still is the concept of using food studies as the lens through which one performs a literary analysis. This thesis focuses on doing just that. I will be looking at three well-known texts: Beowulf, Dracula, and Spirited Away. Each of these texts have common elements: food, humans, and monsters. Together, these elements will be analyzed in the forms of dichotomies present in each text. Dichotomies play a role in food studies and in food in general; as such, my goal is to bring that idea over into the literary analysis while using the food present in the novels to provide support for the analysis. Each text will be featured in its own chapter with a unique analysis. The purpose of these analyses will be to analyze the dichotomy in identity between humans and monsters.
