Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), the methodical abuse of a person by either a current or former romantic partner, is a multifaceted issue, including various forms of abuse (e.g. physical, sexual, emotional and economic). Researching emotional IPV is important given the dearth of literature on the topic and its role in the context of IPV, since research has shown emotional IPV acts as a catalyst to physical violence. Furthermore, there may be common misconceptions surrounding emotional IPV and the severity of its consequences. This research focused on emotional IPV with the goal of gauging perceptions of emotional IPV. In addition, this research attempted to isolate the impact of some demographic characteristics, as well as a self-identified degree of empathy, emotional intelligence, and personal history of emotional IPV victimization, on perceptions of emotional IPV. This research measured the perception of emotional IPV by distributing a short survey to a random sample of students enrolled at a college in Central California. Inconsistent with extant literature, this research found that emotional IPV and its consequences are perceived as a serious issue requiring formal support. Research on the perception of emotional IPV and the dissemination of the findings resulting from this study, may help shape public awareness and the creation of victim policies and victim services allotted to those who have suffered emotional IPV.
