An experimental study of hot-wire calibration equations having the form Nu = usdA + BusdRe, where Nu and Re are the Nusselt number and Reynolds number respectively, was conducted in a variable-speed air flow to examine the systematic variation of calibration coefficients, A and B, with different values of the flow temperature, usdT\sb{g}usd, and the hot-wire temperature, usdT\sb{w}usd. The former temperature was varied from 3C to 30C, the overheat ratio, which depends upon usdT\sb{w}/T\sb{g}usd, was varied from 1.5 to 1.95, and the flow Reynolds number based on hot-wire diameter and flow velocity was varied from 0.6 to 5. The method of least squares, in conjunction with statistical significance tests, was used to estimate A and B from the hot-wire calibration data at different flow and wire temperatures. Subsequently, the variation of A and B were determined as functions of usdT\sb{g},\ T\sb{w}usd and the "film temperature", usdT\sb{f}\ =\ (T\sb{g}\ +\ T\sb{w})/2usd. The results revealed the following: (a) The exponent "n" in hot-wire equations can be considered to be constant. (b) The coefficient "A" appears to depend upon usdT\sb{g}usd; whereas, the coefficient "B" appears to be a constant (i.e., independent of usdT\sb{g}usd). (c) For a given heated turbulent flow, with usdT\sb{w}usd kept constant, the assumption that usdT\sb{g}usd does not vary causes unacceptable errors in the estimated velocity field of the flow; however, the velocity-field errors resulting from treating the relevant fluid properties (viz., thermal conductivity and kinematic viscosity) and the calibration coefficients "A" and "B" as constants are small, although not insignificant, in comparison with the errors caused by ignoring the variations in usdT\sb{g}usd.
