This project aims to investigate and exemplify the use of translation as a theme and of the translator as a character in fiction in order to argue the usefulness of fiction as a source for insights on translation. Through a part theoretical analysis/ part translation of Fawaz Haddad's novel ( Al-Mutarjim al-Kha'in, The Traitorous Translator), this project will look at how the novel portrays translation as a creative resistant act, in opposition to the mainstream "essentialist" conceptions of translation that confine it to a mere act of mechanical reproduction. It also portrays a translator who resists the traditional conception of translators as invisible agents tasked with transporting meaning from one language into another. The novel utilizes this thread of translation as resistance to further critique the institutional restraints imposed on writing and creative thought by the hegemonic Syrian literary and political system. A translation of chapters from the novel will provide examples to support such rationale and document issues encountered in the translation process.
