Restrictive eating disorders (EDs) are psychiatric conditions marked by self-starvation, body image concerns, and distress associated with gaining weight (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). These conditions, which commonly affect adolescents (Smink, Hoeken, & Hoek, 2012), can also result in psychological and emotional consequences such as low mood, anxiety, and somatic symptoms among family members (Dimitropoulous et al., 2009; Honey et al., 2006; Anastasiadou, Medina-Pradas, Sepulveda, & Treasure, 2014; Honey & Halse, 2007). The primary aim of this study was to examine the association between family-level burden and symptom accommodation, defined as the engagement in ED behaviors to temporarily alleviate distress (Treasure et al., 2008; Winn et al., 2007). This study also explored the secondary burden associated with participating in research in the context of caring for an adolescent with an ED, and the corresponding feasibility of this type of study. Parents (n = 24) of individuals with EDs completed questionnaires to assess symptom accommodation (i.e., the Accommodating and Enabling Scale of Eating Disorders), caregiver burden (i.e., Eating Disorder Symptom Impact Scale, WHO Quality of Life-Bref), and research experience (Reactions to Research Participation Questionnaire). Symptom accommodation was found to predict caregiver burden surrounding nutrition and food (i.e., Eating Disorder Symptom Impact Scale-Nutrition variable). Symptom accommodation did not predict other facets of caregiver burden. Parents also reported having adverse research experiences marked by unfavorable cost-benefit ratios associated with research participation. Results regarding sibling experience were unable to be assessed due to low sample size and feasibility challenges. Obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the burden experienced by families and the factors that are associated with distress can inform intervention development and study design.
