The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the failure of the intervention in HIV-positive young adults in Owerri, Nigeria. The study of HIVpositive young adults provided a historical perspective of the prevalence and spread of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and Nigeria. A purposive sample of 17 HIV-positive young adults who obtained treatment at a specialist hospital in Imo State, Nigeria were selected for one-on-one interviews. Five themes emerged from participant interviews, these themes are shame and societal stigma, lack of empowerment through information, inadequate health and development infrastructures, financial issues, and limited access to prevention and treatment. In addition, religion, tradition, and cultural practices contributed to the deficiency of prevention and treatment for HIV-positive youths. The theoretical frameworks that facilitated understanding of the study results are protection motivation theory (PMT), health belief model (HBM), theory of reasoned action /planned behavior (TRA) and Socio-ecological model (SEM). Recommendations included introducing informal programs that provide HIV counseling and testing for youths in locations where they gather, providing higher levels of education, and structuring interventions based on the socio-cultural contexts and environments of the target population. Findings from this study may improve knowledge of HIV-preventive behaviors among young adults and help bolster the effectiveness of intervention programs.
