The public health issue of hypertension in the Nigerian American community was the focus of this study. Research indicates that members of the Nigerian American community develop high blood pressure earlier in life and more often than European Americans and Mexican Americans. Hypertension can lead to other major health problems such as kidney disease, kidney failure, and stroke. Individuals who have hypertension are 4 to 6 times more likely than individuals without hypertension to have a stroke. Hypertension occurs in an area of the brain where blood no longer circulates. It is important for health professionals to pay attention to hypertension, which is known as the silent killer. The theoretical framework in this study was the theory of planned behavior, developed by Ajzen, and the activity theory developed by Vygotsky. The activity theory indicates that tools mediate human activity. This study involved using a descriptive qualitative method to secure information on the effects of hypertension in the Nigerian American community in a Texas metropolitan area. The study included a sample of 30 participants and provides valuable insight on the need to provide strategies and interventions to eliminate or reduce the effects of hypertension in the targeted Nigerian community. Analysis of the focus group transcripts indicated that all participants agreed that dietary habits and living in or shuttling between two cultures can be contributory factors to developing hypertension. All participants indicated that the risk factors for hypertension are preventable. Most participants indicated they are making specific changes to generate solutions or to seek care for their condition.
