Rice Husk Ash (RHA) has been considered as an agricultural waste material, but its pozzolanic characteristics and chemical compositions have increased its potential to be a supplementary cementitious material. This study presents findings from a combination of laboratory and field experimental plan executed on RHA-modified regular and flowable fill concrete (FFC) mixtures. With the investigation of different laboratory experiments involving mechanical properties and durability, coarse RHA particle was not found to be suitable for regular concrete. On the other hand, test results of FFC mixtures made using coarse RHA particles proved them to be viable construction materials. Furthermore, a field demonstration conducted to assess the workability, placement, and in-service performance of RHA modified FFC has proven its suitability in filling trenches for pipelines and utility lines. Findings of this study will help the transportation and construction agencies in using RHA as a cost-effective construction material.
