An ethic of environmental stewardship can find valuable support in the world's existing cultural and spiritual traditions. This paper emphasises the Vedic heritage for eco-care, citing as examples numerous passages from Hindu sacred writings, including the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. These scriptures demonstrate an early understanding of the need to temper our material appetites, and most importantly, to treat the earth with care and respect.
