Abstract Reflecting on self-deception makes us aware that this phenomenon is far more complex than a 'problem' or 'illness' in need of solution or therapy. It confronts us with the question of who we are and what kind of person we want to be. Truth and honesty are intertwined, and reality must also be conceived ethically: one cannot overestimate the precautions that must be taken to guard against obtaining proof from research that fits with what we expect to obtain, because our wishes and our preferences have led us to affect our awareness and cognitive faculties to respond in accordance with our expectations.
