"Although the words of Jesus, "You are the light of the world," are much used in missiological contexts, there has been surprisingly little attention given to their significance in the gospel of Matthew. This article argues that their position, at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount, intentionally placed between the beatitudes and Jesus' words about "righteousness," provides a missiological focus for the Sermon, and for the whole teaching of Jesus.
