Mūsā l-Kāẓim (d. 183/799), the seventh Imām of the Twelver Shīʿa, was born in al-Abwāʾ, near Medina, between 127/745 and 129/747 (Ibn Kathīr, 13:623; al-Mufīd, 288; al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī, 13:29; Ibn al-Jawzī, 9:87). His laqab means "one who remains silent" or "the restrained one" and refers to his purported political quietism.
