The kwitra ( kouitra, quitra ) is a plucked instrument in the lute family. Today, it is associated almost exclusively with the Arabo-Andalusī musical traditions practiced in North Africa, particularly in schools in the border region between Algeria and Morocco. Whilst sharing many generic features with the more common ʿūd sharqī (eastern oud), it differs in its dimensions, timbre, ornamentation, and tuning. 1.
