Kizimkazi -Dimbani is at the southern end of Unguja island in the Zanzibar archipelago. It has a mosque with the earliest known floriated Kufic inscription, dated to 500/1107. It is near the older site of Unguja Ukuu, which was settled from about 500 C.E. to 338/950 (Juma) and contains much Sāsānid and Islamic pottery. Kizimkazi was investigated by Neville Chittick, Mark Horton and Catherine Clark, and Else Kleppe; they established an archaeological sequence that is consistent with the date of the inscription.
