Mīrzā Āqā Khān Kirmānī (1853 or 1854-96), the assumed name of ʿAbd al-Ḥusayn Khān, was a controversial Persian intellectual belonging to a group of political activists in revolt against the political and socio-cultural establishments prevailing in Iran during his lifetime. Kirmānī was born in Mashīz, a small town west of Kirmān city. Both his parents were descendants of illustrious families who could trace their genealogies as far back as the sixteenth century and that included prominent Ṣūfī leaders, a respected Shīʿī jurist, and even a Zoroastrian convert
